Senior Gift of 1934 Adds Tone Of PastTo Scenic Campus

Most Tech students realize that the 76 acres that comprise the Tech campus were once the grounds for a United States Arsenal. This fact is the reason that our school has so many interesting spots and traditions.

One point of interest that many Techites may not recognize is the rock that rest on the mound on the west side of the Michigan Street entrance. This two-ton boulder was uncovered during some campus improvements.

The Senior Class of 1934 chose to place a bronze plaque on the rock and set the rock on the former site of a cannon. A resident of Woodruff Place showed the Senior Class the original site. The plaque states as follows:

“This native boulder marks the original site of the Sunrise and Sunset gun of the U.S. Arsenal which occupied these grounds from 1862-1902.”

An interesting side-line to the story concerns a young soldier who placed a rock in the cannon. When he fired the cannon, it turned over. For this the solder was sentenced to ten days in the Guard House.

And so what was once the site of a Civil War Cannon is now a rock with a plaque which commemorates the former Untied States Arsenal.
