Subject: John Dillinger (former Indy eastside resident)

I met John Dillinger's nephew and great nephew yesterday. The two men along with Carol Sissom gave a program at the Indiana State Library. It was in connection with Ms. Sissom's new published book BANKING with DILLINGER. The Dillinger family were major contributors to this book. Irony: John's Great Nephew is a gun toting Federal Police Officer! ISL just opened it's massively large DILLINGER DISPLAY to the public.

Prior to moving to Mooresville IN, the Dillinger family lived on Boyd street and also on Cooper St. I'm nearly certain John atteded IPS NO. 38 and I know he went to Hillside Christian Church where his father was a deacon. If John had not moved and quit school he would have graduated from Arsenal Tech.

In a recent published letter, shared by the Dillinger Family: While in Prison he wrote a letter to his father. John mentioning that he wished he had stayed in school and attended TECH as his father wanted him to.

I'm not glamourizing crime or the Dillinger Gang, but the historical drama of the Dillinger family has always facinated me. Several of John cousins and relatives did graduate from Tech, and were the salt of the earth. I know some personally.

Randy...coincidentally, 62 years ago my husband and I were married in Hillside Christain Church. Or rather, next door in the minister's house as it was March and cold and we did not have the money he said he would need to heat the church. Elmer's mom used to take him to church there and he also attended scout meetings in the basement of the church with weekly dues of 5 cents. When we go back to visit in Indy and travel to the East side we always look at the church driving on I-70.

Boyd Street: From the south, proceed north on Rural until you cross Massachuesettes Ave., then the train tracks. The next street is Roosevelt Ave. The next street north of Roosevelt WAS Boyd. Boyd Tee'ed into Rural and ran west of Rural. Boyd was a victim of I-70. More on Cooper St. Later.

I don't know about a movie but you may have heard something about one of the cars that he used. A 1930 Model A Ford coupe, used by Dillinger, is being auctioned this week at the Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction in Scottsdale Arizona. I will be attending the auction on Friday and look forward to seeing the car, and many others. I understand that the car was restored complete with all of the bullet holes filled in. If you are interested, I can dig out some more information for you.

There was a movie in 2009. Public Enemies. It was about John Dillinger (and others I think). There was a big deal at Crown Hill Cemetery special tours to his grave. My great aunt and uncle are buried in the same section. Some people thought they were making him out as a hero.

Sam, thanks for info. No, I don't need any more. Are you going to bid on the car? It should be a dandy. Too bad they patched up the bulletholes!

I have a 29 Buick, right hand drive, that my sons-in-law are eager to get up and running, but money (on my part) is the stumbling block! Well, anyway.

Randy, that is probably the movie I read about. I did not know Dillinger is buried in Crown Hill.

One time, when I was very little, I remember one night all the neighbors were out around our house, it was dark, and my Mom was holding me. And there were police cars everywhere, and people were saying that Dillinger was over on Highland Ave. They said he was at my uncle's brother's house. (I lived on Dorman, a block over). I cannot believe this to be a true memory, although it has always stuck in my mind, but I was too little when he died (1934 - I was born in 1933)to have this to be true. It's interesting though.

Guess you all know that all you have to do is "Google" Dillinger and you get all the information your need or might even want. Pictures and all.
