A 5.2 magnitude earthquake centred near this southern Illinois town struck before dawn yesterday, rocking skyscrapers in Chicago, 379 km to the north, but doing little damage and seriously hurting no one.

It was a tremor that might be ignored in earthquake-savvy California, but it rattled nerves in Milwaukee, Cincinnati and Louisville, Ky., where bricks fell to the pavement, and was also reportedly felt as far away as southern Ontario.

"We thought it (the house) was falling on us, we really did," said 85-year-old Anna Mae Williams, who was shaken awake at 4:37 a.m. in tiny West Salem, 10 km from the epicentre.

Dozens of aftershocks followed, one at magnitude 4.6.

The quake is believed to have involved an extension of the New Madrid fault, a network of deep cracks in the earth below the U.S. Midwest, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

I live down in southern IN. by the little town of Vevay on the Ohio River, and things were rockin and rollin when the earthquake happened. I have four dogs and about 15 minutes before it happened they were barking like crazy so I went out to see what was wrong and almost got knocked off my feet. The ground was really shaking.

Glad to hear you are ok Mike. It was felt in the Cinci. area, although my husband & I didn't feel it. Two of our daughters did, however. One, said her house shook...at first she thought it was the wind. The other is in a 2nd floor apt. and said it shook. I think, around here anyway, most of the people who felt it were awake already.
Sarah, Madonna....how about you??

Earthquake? In central Indiana I slept like a baby. Nothing to it.

I felt the earthquake but took a minute to figure out what it was. My dogs alerted me to something happening....

As far as the aftershocks go....there is no way of telling as the building I work in shakes, rattles and sways all the time. Our office is on the 44th floor of the Chase Bank Building. Great view, but ......

Sarah, I believe my best friend works in that same building. She is with Ernst and Young! She talks about it swaying all the time and about the plane that sometimes seems to fly by her window!

Yes, we are in the same building....my view to the outside world faces north.....and when they do the veterans day fly by it really is interesting. Looks like they are coming right at the building. Kinda fun when the hilacopter hovers too. :^)

Be watching for my friend Mickie, you can't miss her! She is very tall with beautiful long red hair cut in a shag. Sometimes she wears it straight and sometimes she lets her natural curl show! If you see her, tell her Becky said hi!

I will do that. Did she work at E & Y when the were located in the One Indiana Square building? If so I think I may know who you are talking about.

I was the corporate concierge over there for nine years and had more contact with the E & Y people during that time.

Sarah, Yes, she is an Ad-man I believe and has been with the Company for longer than I have known her. She is my very Best Friend and Sister! My own Sister met her and wondered when we had gotten another sister that she didn't know about. Mickie is one of those special people that you might meet once in a lifetime! She has a very high stressed position with E&Y!!!!
