Subject: Unthinking Tech Students of Old

JUST IMAGINE

In the early 1900’s when automobiles were strange and dreadful things, the state of Iowa deemed it necessary to protect the lives and property of its citizens from these new machines. A law was therefore passed requiring the drivers of motor vehicles to stop one mile outside of any town they wished to drive through and telephone the town marshall that they were coming. This gave that worthy dignitary a chance to see that all horses were firmly hitched to racks so that they would not bolt through plate glass windows in an effort to escape the noisy, terrifying machines and to see that other similar protective measures were taken. In time, of course, this law became obsolete and was rescinded.

Considered in the light of 1932 it is an absurd restriction. Few people would obey it. But what has Tech to do with all this? Well, though Tech has few rules and regulations, none of them is obsolete. Right up to minute, they place no unjust restrictions on students. Therefore, when students continue that dear old pastime of endeavoring to be first in lunch line at the expense of others, making spectacular, if tardy, entrances to class, gayly pushing and shoving in the halls, or tormenting some patient traffic officer, one wonders.

And wondering, one concludes that these unthinking ones are in a minority. They are the unthinking ones to whom a “don’t” is as the famed red flag to a bull.

One wonders, “Will Tech’s campus always, at lunch time, be over-run with amateur track-team members or will the students at some time in the dim future walk sedately to lunch?”
