Subject: Tech Trivia (again)

Back when I was in High School, and prior, for many years there was a special portion of the Indianapolis Star, called "The Teen Star". This portion was all about what was going on in all of the Marion County High Schools. The Teen Star was in the Saturday edition. One could keep up with sports, and any other activies in the life of these local high schools. During the summer months the Teen Star was omitted, and then came back when school started up in September.

Trivia Question: In the last edition for the school year 1970, on the front page of the Teen Star was a large photo of two graduating Seniors from the Tech Class of 1970. Who were these two very photogenic students?

Randall K. Wilson
Class of 1970

Another fun thing about the Teen Star is that they actually PAID for articles written by students. The name for a person who is not on the regular payroll but gets paid by the column inch of printed story is "stringer," because the writer bills the newspaper by taping all his or her stories stories together in a long string and measuring its length in column inches. In 1960, I think they paid seven cents an inch, not quite enough to make an impact on tuition for your common, garden-variety high school stringer.

THE TEEN STAR
Saturday June 6, 1970

The top half of the front page is a photo taken at the Class of 1970's Commencement exercise (in the packed torrid boys gym on June 1st.). With the caption: Pupils Mark The "End And The Beginning"

At the bottom the the front page is about a 5" by 7" close up photo of two Grads...that being, James W. Farrior and Mary Spencer. This taken prior to the commencement. The caption of this reads: James W. Farrior, 1970 Arsenal Technical graduate, gives the cap of Mary Spencer, a final adjustment just before commencement exercises.

The Teen Star brings to mind the Teen Board made up of a student from each high school that was offered by Wm. H. Block Department Store. Anyone remember that?
