Subject: Randy, need your help

Randy, I want to find out info on my Dad in WWI: when he went in; where he was in France; ect. I know you use the Indiana State Library services. Can I use that and if so, how? Does it cost to do it? Also, how to find out info on Indiana National Guard, because he was in that before he went into the Army.

Donna see inserts *

Randy, I want to find out info on my Dad in WWI: when he went in; where he was in France; ect. * Frankly I have not done much research that dealt specifically with WWI veterans service.*

I know you use the Indiana State Library services. Can I use that and if so, how? * There again, I don't know exactly what they have in their catalog pertaining to WWI service veterans.*

Does it cost to do it? * At the Indiana State library I do know they do some "limited" research, case in point: I know they will look up a single obituary, copy it, and mail it to you for a fee of $2.50. With their limited staff there is just so much they can do in the form of "look ups".

Also, how to find out info on Indiana National Guard, because he was in that before he went into the Army. *Sorry dunno for sure, but this is something that may come under the Indiana State Archives... possibly.

Sorry I could not of been more help.

This I do know for sure, At the State Library they have a book or books which are hardbound. In this book if a soldier or sailor died specifially during WWI they will have a photo of them and a little overview about the person. The cause of death does not have to be combat related to get into this book. I know of a gent from my area of Shelby county who is in the book and he died of natural causes in the US. He never went overseas. However he is in the book by virtue of the fact that he was serving in the Army during WWI.

My suggestion is to go the the Indiana State Libraries website, get their phone number and call them asking the same questions you placed on this message board. Then do the same for the Indiana State Archives which is now on East 30th Street in Indianapolis. Either of these two places I would think could point you in the right direction.

The Department of Veteran affairs is another place which you might check out.

You can take this to the bank. The answer to your questions are out there. WWI was very recent in terms of American history and record keeping. It would not surprise me if you will have to obtain his veteran records from some place like the National Archives or some Federal Government Military Storage Facility. The key to finding the information is your own personal determination and interest. Since you are a surviving daughter that will be helpful if you get into some of these confidentiality scenarios.

For the sake of this discussion, may I have your Fathers full name and date of birth. You can send that to me here on the message board or at my personal email address: froggy@svs.net

Thanks everybody.

My Dad is Leslie Bryan Johnson, DOB: 5-29(I think)-1897.

Randy, will try all your suggestions; thanks.

Fred,I will try your website when I can get to the library with more time.

Charlene, yes, would appreciate your looking it up.

I have a record of his enlistment and discharge, which I obtained at the State Library some years ago; also of my great-grandfather who was in the Civil War. It was fun looking things up there but took a long time, and I am not in Indy very often, or long enough, to do it.

Again, thanks.
Donna
