When this crime occured I had been visiting the Maranatha Baptist Church which was located at 3851 E. New York St. (Across from the crime scene). Eventually after the crime was committed I joined this church. Eventually the pastor Larry Patterson shared this story. Incidentally, Rev. Larry Patterson graduated from Arsenal Technical H.S. in the class of 1955. After high school graduation from Tech he graduated from Baylor University in Texas, then the Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville Kentucky.

There in 1965 Larry was in the churches pastor's study when a policeman came into the church. During the initial investigation Larry was ask by the police to come across the street and sit in the police car with Jenny Likens. The police explained that Jenny's older sister had just been found dead and that foul play was suspected. Jenny was the younger sister who had survived this home of vile evil and madness. Jenny was very upset and the police felt that Larry being a Minister and all would be able to console the grieving upset little sister of Sylvia's.

To my knowledge Gertrude or any of this family never visited Maranatha Baptist church. However the Church on several occasions had extended invitations to this household to attend their services. Which were refused. Larry as well as other members of the church were very grieved that such a horrendous crime was being committed right in the nearby shadows of their church building. Obviously the congregation had no way of knowing this.

IMHO the parents of Sylvia and Jenny should have been put on trial right up there with the evil lady keeping them. The parents were just plain neglectful and should have had the book thrown at them for leaving their daughters in the company of an evil person like Gertrude. The history of this crime will never dim from my memory and still upsets me to this day.
