Subject: Free Agents-Coin Flips

Hearing through the grape vine that some (you know who you are) have questioned to one degree are another the fairness (honesty) of the coin flips for free agents (appears this occurs mostly when I win one). First off, if you have a problem with it then you should question me and not others, secondly after 13 years I thought you would trust me by now, but that is besides the point. You can probably guess how I feel about it! For the record I'm 3-2 this year in coin flips!!

One option that has come up that would take flips out of the picture is silent bidding for the free agents.

Here are the early thoughts on how it would work (some details will need to be worked out later if we go with it).

On Tuesday when the market opens you would do as always and either call or email me with your moves prior to 5:30pm; however, now you would attach a max price you are willing to pay to pick up that player. If no one else wants him you would get the player at the standard $5 fee, if others are interested then the highest bid would be awarded that player. Have not figured out yet how to handle to max bids that are the same, but will come up with something. After Tuesday free agent pick ups would be as usual, first come first served with the standard $5 fee.

True, as Commish I would still have an "advanteage" as I would see everyone's bid and theoretically could bid higher than anyone else. However, that would just put more cash in the pot and the chances of me spending $20 (etc...) to out bid someone is proabbly pretty slim.

Postives - more cash in the kitty
Negative - low income teams probably would not get many top free agents

So chew on that this off-season and we will address it next years draft.

Peace, Commish
