Fear of AIDS epidemic in WHP
AN HIV/AIDS storm is set to sweep the Western Highlands province if nothing is done to contain the spread of the disease.
Figures released by the National AIDS Council show that the province has the second highest number of infection recorded in the country to date, behind the National Capital District.
According to Vincent Manakayasi, from the National Aids Secretariat office, this is a grave concern to the Provincial AIDS Council.
During a government agency networking meeting yesterday, Mr Manakayasi said that the number of HIV/AIDS related deaths at the Mt Hagen General Hospital is increasing, but authorities were showing little concern about it.
He said this year the National Government allocated K400,000 to the National AIDS Council to fight the spread of the disease but the funds were insufficient to carry out their work.
But he said he was grateful AusAID chipped in some money to them.
The Western Highlands Provincial AIDS Council has come up with some plans to tackle the spread of HIV/AIDS in the province.
The working group comprised of people from the provincial government, private sector, NGO, churches, women and youths.
The meeting yesterday was organised by government agency representative on the Provincial AIDS Council, Jenny Gong.
Mrs Gong said the meeting was convened to pool all government agencies in the province to work as a team to combat the disease from spreading.
Mrs Gong said that through networking, the government agencies would draw plans for action in communities in the rural areas.
Another workshop would be held on April 28 for peer educators.
