Owners of Banz want settlers out
By JAMES APA GUMUNO
TRADITIONAL landowners of Banz station have petitioned the Lands Department, police and the Western Highlands government to remove illegal settlers from the area.

tribes. At a meeting in Banz this week, the landowners gave authorities 14 days to remove the settlers. Failing that, the people would do so themselves.
Landowner spokesman John Kaunga said they were not aware of any land titles obtained by the settlers, mostly from the Tunzkup tribe on the border of Jimi and Waghi, to come and occupy land around Banz town.
The land in question is State property.
Mr Kaunga wants lands officers to look into the matter, alleging that there have been reports of corrupt deals involved in the acquisition of certain titles.
The Tunzkup people are also reported to have occupied land around Angco Coffee, Old Forestry and Department of Primary Industry station, Catholic Mission and Wahgi Mek.
A leader of the Andpang people was attacked last week by settlers when he attempted to stop them from clearing a piece of land near the Banz district office.
Kump Garianga, in his late 50s, was seriously injured and is at the Kudjip Nazarene Hospital.
An X-ray report showed a broken hip joint as a result of the attack.
His tribesmen have demanded the Tunzkup to pay K60,000 and 50 pigs in compensation before Sept 14.
