Hiya,
Its a bit sad to read about this icon educational institution of the province and the country located right in my Jiwaka being potrayed as the centre for young people learning to be ethnicist, regoionalists and warrrors at the end.
Read on....article from the national newspaper

Fight disrupts classes at Fatima

AN ethnic clash between students at the Fatima Secondary School in the Western Highlands province has left several people injured and classes disrupted.
The fight, between students from the Jiwaka and Hagen areas, erupted following a rugby touch game at the school last Sunday.
Samson Pamunda, an injured student from the school confirmed this incident at the Mt Hagen General Hospital yesterday.
He was there to receive treatment for bruises and cuts he sustained from stones thrown to his head and calf.
He told The National that two players from opposing sides started fighting during the game.
Before long, other students joined in and the fight erupted into all out brawl, Pamunda said.
He said one of the teams had boys mainly from the Hagen area and the other had boys from the Jiwaka area.
Following the fight, the Jiwaka boys asked the Hagen students to pay compensation for one of their guys who sustained some injuries in his face.
Pamunda said the Hagen boys agreed and were collecting money for the compensation payment when the Jiwaka boys attacked them with the help of friends.
A stone-fight evolved, and the Hagen students who were outnumbered were chased to the Wahgi River.
Pamunda said in the dark, it was a miracle that his fellow students managed to escape, with some seeking refuge at the homes of coffee plantation labourers from the Southern Highlands province.
"Other students may have returned home via the Kimel Kondopina and Kindeng route," Pamunda said
Yesterday when they tried to make their way to Hagen, the Jiwaka students with some more supporters came looking for them near the river.
He said a fight started again and one student from Hagen received a serious knife wound to his head and body.
He said teachers from the school eventually stopped the fight and brought him and two of his friends to Kudjip hospital where they were treated.
Parents of other students from the Hagen area were still looking for their children yesterday.
The National was not able to reach the school authorities for comments yesterday.

Such attitude of high school kids will not change. Have been there for 7 years and experienced such occasion 2-3 times every year. Human beings' way of thinking and actions change when we reach different stages of our life and development. At a teenage stage and in early twenties, young people come up with so many ideas and they all have the same sort of mentality although a few good students can be found among the group. While those with good behavior and understanding are few in number, the majority tend to rule. In addition, the environment in which one lives play an important role in different physiological effects which then results in such stupid actions. After having been through life for sometime, they will eventually tend to realize that their actions were wrong as you and I would now comment. Otherwise it has been a normal practice in the past and such will go on unless the stupid principal such as Mr. Mangi does something very constructive as to avoid discrimination amongst the Jiwakas and the Hagen (including Hag. North, Central, Tambul Nebilyer, Mul Baiyer) students.

I would suugest if a very strict rule is imposed on the student descipline and terminating students from studies who try to practice this corrupt practice will slow down the practice...

Until then, lets hope the situation will cool down and Fatima will develop forward...

Have a blessed day.

Ethnicity, tribalism, regionalism and whatever nism has always been the cause of division leading into such confrontational situation now experienced in Fatima.
School is a perfect place to rid of this negative mentality and get to no people from other ethnical background instead of brewing resentment and hate amongst each other.

i wish this situation is under control and that the students return to class to fullfil their respective goals.

Good luck.

Hiya,
My beautiful people. I have got such positive comments and suggestions which makes me feel much better and wish everyone else out there in those various educational institutions in esp in the Jiwaka area know and understand this.

Wait a minute! Is there a possibility of having say a group of leaders in the district or maybe a group of senior students from say Unitech, UPNG, Vudal, UOG, DWI, Overseas, etc, etc, would put a team together and arrange to visit these schools in the region to talk about all these ethnicism, reginalism, warrior type mentality, payback, this is my school - you get out, crime against brothers of own kind ..etc... and their consequences to all those hyped-up young minds in those schools?
If anything like that is possible and would happen then, I would like to see myself being part of this!

Only a thought...and a dream of how to make my place Jiwaka a better place...
Thanks guys...

I think there is much needed to be done within the institution's management strategy. Cause ever since, Fatima never at one time use to have such reputation up until this was our first incident in our histories.

I would like to see the changes within the management vacinity. That is where the root cause is, failure in the reinforcement of laws and rules. Failure (too slow)in taking such incident into account for better solution. That management's stupidity alone allowed the incident to take its own path and that is where I am blaming, and that is where needed to be fixed. Other aspects of tribe and clan's survival is here to stay, thus I wouldn't bother commanting on those secondary facts as a root cause.

A couple of months ago, I read an article in the national newspaper about Fatima paying tribute to one of the most respected english teacher,Br. Martins whom i have the previledge and honour to know and taught by. (Ex.Fatima will agree on that.)On the article also (mind you,it was written by an ex.Fatima who is now a journalist of National paper) rightfully highlights the achievement and the benefits recieved from the school. Being a product of this reputable institution, I was proud of the positive coverage and even told some of my mates boastfully about the positive coverage seen by thousands around PNG and that i was an ex.
Now! The fighting thing at Fatima was a shock to me and i think other ex.Fatima must felt the same. It was a total shame!! Just after all expatriates left last year, this problem comes about. Kondol tai's remark about the management touches some nerves and also question the reliability and effectiveness of the management structure and the people responsible to carry out these tasks. With due respect to our national staff at Fatima, when Br.steve was the principal, discipline was very high,we worked hard acedemically and making kaukau mounts, playing hard and was successfull. I don't know whether this pride is still there.
Well, with the problem before our hand, i think tough measures should be put in place to avoid such disgrace and shamefull thing to happen again. Severe penalties to those involve and if school board find it hard to handle simply send in police to investigate it as criminal matter and lay charges on the cullprites involved. Such strict discplinary measures will surely deter any future abnomilies of violence in fatima.

em tasol tin blo mi.
