Subject: Re: alternative exercises on machines
In reply to: Hampstead Curves 's message, "Re: alternative exercises on machines" on 15:10:46 10/31/03 Fri

This is one of these situations where I want to scream and holler and contact every Curves in the US and tell them to GO TO CLUB CAMP EVERY YEAR because they don't stay informed of Curves International's policies. There are 4 alternative moves that are Curves-approved. These are the only alternative moves that are allowed in our club and allowed by anyone that walks into our club to workout.

The four alternative moves are:
1. a tricep move on the ab/back machine
2. a move on the lateral pull/shoulder press where you sit backwards on the machine
3. calf raises on the leg press
4. a move on the thigh abductor/adductor where you sit forward on the machine

We teach these to our members once they have at least a month's experience under their belt. But to clear up any confusion, they're not to challenge your more, or to work different muscles, but merely to work the same muscles in different ways.

The reason why the other Curves you're going to won't let you use them is because they don't know them (and you're right, a couple are on the training tape). I had a gal that was a guest in our club (I think she was fom Arkansas) that wanted to do situps on the lateral pull machine and I had to take her aside and ask her not to do it while she was at our club because it wasn't an alternative move approved by Curves International. I told her what she did at her club was their business, but I didn't want our members seeing her doing the move and then wanting to imitate it.

Curves Hampstead is right in a sense, you should never try to devise your own moves on the machines. The reason why we'll only show alternative moves approved by Curves Intl is because they developed the equipment and only they know what is safe to do on it. But like I said above, there are a few moves that have been OK'd by them.

I just get sickened and sad when I hear about Curves like yours that are simply uneducated about the business they run. Tell them to go to Advanced Club Camp and learn the moves there.

As for advice for you as to what to do, as long as you're doing one of the 4 moves described above and you're doing them correctly, go ahead and do them! When another member sees you doing them and wants to learn how, tell them to ask the staff to teach them! Maybe that will motivate the staff to get the proper training! As long as you're doing a Curves-approved move, I don't see any problem with it. If you're unsure if you're doing the moves correctly, e-mail me and tell me what you do and I'll let you know if you're on the right track. meladorri@aol.com

Good luck,
Justine
