Most owners hire people who are personable and could get along with the members, but have no fitness experience. The staff usually learn as they go.
The machines are where the magic occurs, strength training and cardio. Work them the best you can, and use the pads to maintain your heartrate. Move lively, however you interpret that.
Stretching after is good because your muscles are warm and less likely to be damaged. If you want to, do before and after, just don't bounce while stretching.
Ask the manager if there is some way to get the book.
