In reply to: Laura 's message, "Calories Burned in a Session??" on 17:13:38 09/16/03 Tue

At our club we used to distribute a flyer that claimed the workout could burn up to 600 calories. I had quite a few people that didn't believe it and asked me to confirm.

So... I called our Area Director and told her about the member's concerns (I wasn't so sure if I believed it either) but she said people burned UP TO 600 calories in all the studies they've done. When I asked how, she said it's simply the combination of resistance training and cardiovascular exercise going on simultaneously.

So, I wouldn't assume that you're burning 600 every time, (that's why they say "up to") but I would guess you could count on burning at least 450, and probably even 500-550. Make sure you're giving the workout your "all." Really challenge yourself on the machines.

Regarding your diet, although calories in/calories out makes sense and that's what many people have done in the past, I HIGHLY recommend reading Permanent Results without Permanent Dieting (the pink hardcover book). It explains why the whole calorie in/calorie out thing really doesn't work for the long term. What you're doing is training your body to live on a lower amount of calories, which essentially lowers your metabolism. Not good! Plus, a low-calorie diet combined with heavy amounts of cardio (I don't know if you're exercising anywhere else than at Curves) can actually end up burning muscle in the long term, which also lowers your metabolism. A half pound of muscle burns 50 calories a day AT REST (that means sitting/sleeping/ watching TV, etc), let alone walking or exercising! So if you loose a pound of muscle through a lo-cal diet, you've lowered your resting metabolism by 100 calories a day. YUK!
Just something to take into consideration. The book explains it in much greater detail and probably better than I ever could.

Regardless, good luck!!!!
