Low carb is usually a LOT less than 40% of your daily intake with regards to calories. The Curves diet allows 20g of non-free carbs on Phase 1 and 40-60 on Phase 2. So quite a bit less. and I know Atkins steps up 10g at a time, until carb-addict symptoms return.

A "balanced diet" is 40% carbs....then you get 30% from fat and 30% from protein. 1g fat = 9 calories and 1g protein = 4 calories. That's the recommended breakdown for the average also known as the 40-30-30 diet.

Also note that if you are done a lot more than Curves, like Curves 3-4 times a week and then walking for an hour on the other days or even every day, you might need to eat more food in order to rev up your metabolism and lose weight. Sounds funny, but it works :)
