At the Curves I belong to the $39 monthly fee is for people who join on a monthly basis. If you commit for a year than the monthly fee is only $29 a month.

Also they run different promotions during the year where they waiver the initial registration fee. Perhaps the club near you will do the same thing at some point.

You should recheck with the club near you to confirm the monthly rate to make sure its not $29 a month if you join for the year. I consider this a reasonable rate - only $1 a day for your health seems pretty good to me. About the same price for a soda or junk food nowadays.
