I long to hear the sound of a gourd rattle
a large one made by hand from Santo Domingo
the stones inside resound as it moves
an outstretched arm overhead swinging wide
an arc formed all the way to the feet
the tips of old broken wing feathers hang on the dancer
the women with a face of yucca and pine boughs
woven dresses made by hand over long days
deerskin coverings and white clay
six of then there are dancing in a line
just over there in the midst of three fires
Six men bent and singing all night stand in a line
the fingers of darkness are turning soft blue
burning embers from a bonfire nearly gone
ashes laying on the ground
while embers float in the cold still air
their voices strained from those winter songs
From the mountain of the west clouds gather
in the distant light of early morning
whistles blow, eagle bones from time past
the sound of it rumbles and it is far off
as if one, they come to a stop and stand silent
listening, mythic beings turn to the west
quietly and silently rattles, drums and sand is gathered
thrown out to the four winds, to wait for another frost
in muffled voices, they move slowly after nine days
quietly with stilted gait, dancers gather their hoods
washing gray away to red brown skin
tightly it is wrapped until winter comes again
in the glow of dawn they scatter to places
Shonto, Red Mesa, Chilchinbeto, Sanostee and many more
they go in twos and threes
Yeis heading to hogans far from here
in the colors of rain, the light of rainbows
the sound of summer can be heard a little ways off
hozhogi, hozhogi, the blessingway begins
travelling on horseback I can see my mountain
the silent refrains of the beautyway sound out
