Hace had a Trapper 500 (Aphrodite) for 5 years - keep her in Coleraine in the Winter and in Donegal in Summer.

I fitted a new Beta 13 at the end of the first season. It fits perfectly - in fact it is smaller (and leaves much more room around the engine area for access) than the original Yanmar, which I removed.

My wiews on access are as follows:

- Oil filler: absolutely fine: I can get a 1Ltr container of oil in above the engine and pour in directly
- Oil drainage: a little restricted, but really quite good. The fact that the Beta has an integral pump mechanism is a massive help. I use a couple of 500ml plastic bottle to pump the old oil into
- coolant: fine - on the rare occasions I top up coolant I use a small container (plastic beaker) and this fits in above the engine wery well
- engine fuel filter: unfortunately access to this is very poor in the Trapper - I have never managed to get enough leverage on this to change it. However does not concern me greatly since I also fitted a new fuel tank (slightly bigger capacity than the original) and have an in-line fuel filter mounted on the bulkhead beside the fuel tank. I keep a very close eye on this.
- Engine anode: access is a little restricted, but you only need to go there very occasionally.
- impeller: excellent unrestricted access, and for speed / convenience I have fitted a speedseal (I think that's the correct name) impeller cover

The Beta has been excellent, very reliable, and pushes Aphrodite along at 5.5 to 6.0 knots when I need to.

One thing I got wrong initially was the exhaust. Although I fitted a water-stop, I did not get the exhaust high enough initially but have reo-rganised it and cable tied it to the top of the engine compartment to maximise the height. In the Traper however this is never perfect due to restricted space (cant really loop the exhaust above the water line) and you must fit a water stop. I have never had any problem with it - just being cautious.

One other point, due to space restriction, the plastic pipe taking raw collant seawater water away from the engine turns at quite a sharp angle. To avoid the risk of kinking (and restricting the flow of water away from the engine) I have put a plastic 90 degree bend in the pipe just a coiple of inches away from the raw water outlet. Again, just a precaution.

The installation was excellent - done by Peter Keig (round Ireland record holder until recently) in Carrickfergus Marina
