I think Anders contribution settles the question

HOWEVER in practice it seems that those actually doing the building where somewhat remiss

Hands up all those that have had cracking on the coachroof
hands up all those that have had cracking at the stantion bases ? etc etc so much for support plates and balsa strengthening!

most of us have had cracking in various degrees and the balsa I found in Sula's coachroof was THE CAUSE of the cracking, not a cure! the balsa packers were FLAT not curved to match the coachroof and only provided support at the edges, they also were not properly bonded, hence the charecteristic horshoe shape to the cracks

Has anyone got a deck in excess of an inch thick? 'cos thats what it would be if it was fully balsa cored! and it probably wouldnt need a liner as balsa core is a sandwich between two layers of GRP (3mm inner 3 mm outer and about 19mm balsa)

Id say that the overall thickess of the deck is not much more than 5 mm thinner in some places (like 3 mm on the coachroof!) thicker in others
