We separated the cushions from the boards partly because it makes them easier to move - especially in the forepeak. I made new covers myself with material bought cheaply on ebay. They're not removable as that would have been beyond my sewing competence (1930's hand powered sewing machine) - it's important that the fabric is really tight. We cleaned and varnished the base boards and drilled liting holes. We're delighted with the result. I haven't yet applied any velcro and they don't often fall off ... I probably will before this season.
