Del, Perhaps you have already seen something I posted earlier on this forum on this point, but I'll repeat it nevertheless because I believe strongly that the rolling boom system as fitted to the Trapper is fundamentally flawed in principle due to the reason I cite, part of why, in my opinion, the boat in the original configuration had disadvantages for single handed sailing.

The original mainsail reefing system, a roller boom, is difficult to reef when single-handed and the ship's head falls off the wind (which it always does without way on and someone on the helm) and the mainsail fills and will not roll properly. Indeed, if the luff bolt rope runs in the mast groove the friction of the entire length of sail pressed against the slot will jam it completely – I changed to sliders that at least would run down under such conditions.

The source of the problem is the boom that must be kept in-line with the ship or the knuckle joint of the through-the-mast turning handle cannot rotate with the boom at any significant angle to the handle mechanism.

Many years ago before GRP became ubiquitous, I owned a small wooden yacht with an earlier version of the rolling boom system. This used a bronze-handled ratchet claw that engaged on a toothed ring fitted at the gooseneck and could rotate the boom with it at any angle to the line of the ship. The later, through-the-mast mechanism was a retrograde step in functionality.

You've made a good choice with the yacht but go with the slab-reef conversion if you ever expect to find yourself sailing alone.
