I would stick with 8mm as I think you will find 6mm just too hard to handle to get the right tension. If like Azurian you have twin halyards I can see the attraction of going down a size to reduce windage on the unused halyard. The wire is only 4mm. The sheave should be OK for 8mm - when I replaced the main halyard I went up to 10mm as much more comfortable and that runs through OK.

Last winter I did my own rope to wire splice - not as difficult as they would have you believe but not sure it saves a lot. I have had two rope to wire halyards made up by Jimmy Green - if you can hang on I think they do a discount at the end of the season.
