Thank you both for replies. We have 4 metres of chain then rope. Once when it happened we actually already had the keel raised - the rope seemed to get trapped between keel bulb and hull. Maybe that's why they're called Trappers!
The most mysterious time was at Pin Mill on a boatyard mooring - all the other boats swung happily with the tide and we got stuck. We plan to try a weight on the anchor line next season
