Two boats in our club came out of the water without a barnacle in sight.

One had been stripped, epoxied, coated in hard racing A/F and then eroding A/F in a contrasting colour - the idea being that if shingle or flints dig through the soft stuff the hard stuff will get the barnacles anyway. Contrasting colours tell you when to stop scrubbing down the soft stuff.

The other boat has had awful barnacle problems before now. This year the owner mixed chilli powder into his A/F. It worked like a charm, but would you want to rub it down? Even with good goggles - the thought of a speck of that in your eye would not be fun!

One could always come out for a mid season scrub.

A.
