Hi Brian, glad to hear you survived that relatively unscathed.

I've known two vessels with very similar failures occur, both were backstays and both whilst running.

In both instances the helms were quick enough to round up vitually as the stay went twang and the mast remained upright.

One was a Sabre 27, which just needed new rigging, the other was a Rival 38 that was later found to have a kink in the top section of the mast and had to have a new mast.

in both cases it wasn't the wire rigging itself that failed but the fitting that held the clevis pin.
