I bought a bilge keel 500 with a 501 interior abount 6 years ago. Like you she was (and is) my first boat. To date I have sailed her extensively around the East Coast and have ventured down to the South Coast and over to France.

She has proven to be a real seaworthy boat and I doubt whether there is much to choose between the fin and bilge keel versions in terms of speed and manouverability. Trappers are quick when sailed right in the right conditions. Over the years she has left many larger and more expensive boats standing - much to my enjoyment!

The upside for East Coast work is that she is easily dried out on the mud up a deserted creek. The rudder can be vunerable but as long as you do your homework before drying out there should be no problem. I have certainly not encounterd any damage to the rudder as yet.

Trappers are great little craft and I think much underestimated by the larger boating fraternity. Mine is certainly NOT for sale!
