John, Rigging isn’t black magic, especially the simple configuration that the T500 has. Get the lengths right and equal on both sides, set up the tensions correctly, check the fittings and their anchoring for rigidity, including the mast base; that the mast itself is intrinsically true and vertical to the beam horizontal with firm tangs aloft – not much to it actually.

You were right not to obsess on the length of the shrouds themselves (unlike the riggers), small differences can be compensated for with the turnbuckles, that’s why they are adjustable length, not just to achieve tension. Your practical ‘get it vertical and properly tensioned’ was absolutely correct to cure the problem.

It’s amazing what influence the correct rig setting has though – just shows what a great design she is that it all comes together to sail as well as she does.

I don’t know anything about Hartlepool marina as it’s been so long since I sailed into there, but I could have recommended some people in the next port south, Whitby, where I sailed out of for many years a lifetime (or two) ago; ones that I’ve kept in touch with and whom I trust to give good advice or do good work.

You’ll need a broker with good coverage (whether he sails or not) as the NE yachting scene is somewhat restricted – well it was in my day and from my contacts there has become even more so - unlike the south coast. I did see Sula advertised on the web so at least he has that facility.

Good luck with your sale, it is probably coming up to the right season for it.

Best, Brian.
