Anyone who wants to run any of a few million modern applications, that's who. My system is full of essential (to me) programs that run perfectly fast and stable on my pentium 4 and XP with SP2, the fairly standard combination these days, that would be impossible to even install without it.

The multi-tasking ability alone is necessary to me as I have my trading software (with separate real-time screens showing graphs of stocks I'm watching) running together with maybe an advanced graphics manipulation application such a Photoshop while I'm working on some digital photographs. E-mule is beavering away in the background downloading shared files, a set of Mediterranean charts. The whole setup is working away with stability and with no noticeable delays. I'm no Microsoft lover, quite the reverse, but they seem to have got it right with XP, at last.

And I do know a little about operating systems, having written them in a previous incarnation, when I headed a software group for ITT in Madrid. By the professionals DOS always was known as NOT the way to write operating systems - the first really decent OS by MS was NT, written by a DEC group that Bill managed to lure into the evil empire.

But then, I know I am being wound up by a double act here. Dinosaurs are exinct - aren't they?
