Subject: TS240 Keel repairs - again.

Over last winter I replaced the top section of the keel in my TS240 for the second time and was tempted to put Azurian up for sale. I normally reckon to tackle DIY around the home over the winter which I tell myself allows a clear conscience to go sailing in Summer.

This time I was coming to the conclusion I had had enough of mixing moving parts with salt water and should look for something with none of these and maybe not so lively. Last weekend was the first opportunity for a sail since lift in. Somebody once remarked to me " you don't so much untie this boat as unleash it". Once the mooring is dropped we are off!! Six and a half knots down Stangate Creek to windward under working jib and one reef and with my hefty Mariner 6 in the well - now I remember why I went to so much trouble in the first place.

Should it be of help to any other owners thinking of overhauling their lifting keel mechanism and curious to know what awaits them I have posted some notes and photos at http://www.azurian.hemscott.net

I would welcome some assistance from other forum readers with a remaining problem.

The keel top section comes to rest on two metal upstands or angle irons at the bottom. Azurian is a 1980 boat but I think has been out of the water most winters. Nevertheless while there is a few years of life left in these upstands corrosion has started and I have spoken to another owner here on the Medway who has noticed a similar thing. Somewhere along the line something will have to be done. Does any body know whether these metal members are in fact all one casting or if there are original drawings in existence which shed any light ?

Maybe somebody has already tackled this - if so I would very much like to know how. I have wondered if it would be possible to insert a stainless section with a lip alongside the upstand and maybe another section outside the hull through bolted. I know there are already some counter sunk bolts in the gelcoat alongside the keel which I am told have nuts on top of the upstands. All ideas much appreciated.
