Giles, Iknow this thread does come on a fairly regular basis and I know that somewhere in the archives there is a long thread on it. BUT from memory there seams to be a lot of diferent set ups. in an Ideal world, you kneed to knw the pre-bend that your mainsail is cut for, then set up your rig to suit. I have been playing around with mast rake from 1-2 inches right up to 12 inches. went close to wind but slowly. at the moment I have between 6 and 8 inches which is still a litle to much. This is obviously sett by the fore stay, and that is with no back stay on at all. I only crank in the back stay to de-power the top half of the main when racing if required. The cap shrouds sett the actual fore stay tension the headsail luff tension is done from the main sheet and then sheeting angle I use the traveller. (this is all going to windward) in a force 4 my leeward shroud is just starting to waggle in the wind not a lot but you can see it move. I tried it tighter but it didnt make much difference to anything except stress the rig.
The rule i used was 4 turns over hand tight and it seems to work. the inner shrouds where set up for the prebend (approx 4 inches with no turns on but this is reduced as tension is applied to the lower shrouds down to 2 inches with no back stay at all so at a gues 2 turns over hand tight).
As far as noisy, I was a bit worried about all the bumps and squeeks and squawks coming from below but have found that if you turn the stereo up loud then they go away. sorry I have just learned to ignore them and I have checked round and found no problems so far. I did get some silicon spray lubricant which helped for a while but racing last saterday I did notice they had come back. I dont think they ar anything to worry about as you say it is only the ply wood moving in there grooves.
Hope that this blurb is of some help
Kim
