Hi Guys,

Try this. Pull your backstay down as if you are racing and you mean it, then feel the tension on the cap shrouds.

If the caps are slack now, the rig will tend to twist when you are going to windward in a blow. I think I broke a spreader due to this two seasons ago. (Can't think what else would do it - lucky not to have lost the mast!).

If the caps are slack with a lot of backstay on, you can either tighten them, or tighten the lowers, depending how much mast pre bend you need for your mainsail shape.

The North U fast course book says that our sort of fractional rig should be "super tight" for best perfomance, but they add - make sure your bboat is built to take it before winding it up to the max!

I use a tension meter to check that I don't exceed the rating for the rigging wire gauge I'm using.

We have won both our last two Sunday club races - so the tuning method seems to be working, and I am loving life at the mo!

Cheers,

Alan.
