Hi John, basically the cradle is held by ground chains ,which are kindly supplied by Jersey Harbours. There are about twelve cradles in a row, many of which are tied to a neighbouring cradle to help keep the integrity of the line of cradles. When you enter the cradle on high water or half tide whenever you arrive, the idea is to tie the boat to the cradle with fixed mooring lines, this may take a bit of practise all according to springs or neaps, but generally the boat is then secure in the cradle and settles in our drying harbours nicely.Sometimes when we have a bit of a blow, the cradles can move about a bit, especially if someone in the row has their boat out of the water and up on the hard. This is where we get the degradation of the wooden cradles which if maintained properly can give an average life of about ten years.A lot cheaper than ten years of Marina dues!
