We have a 1981 300 - White Horse II - and our log transducer is also in on the starboard side aft of the keel leading edge. I agree with the comment you got that this is not a good position. We find that there is a clear difference in log reading close hauled on port and starboard tacks. This is consistent with the increased local flow velocity that the transducer would see on starboard tack due to the incidence induced on the fin by leeway. Downwind, the log generally agrees reasonably well with the GPS - allowing for tide.
