I absolutely agree Brian. I shouldn't think a Trapper 500 too much different under power to a 28 and I am sooo glad to have changed to 18hp driving a 3-bladed 11" prop.
We had some correspondence here earlier on this subject and I repeat that it all depends on when, how and where you sail - but with a short, steep sea, a contrary tide and a strong wind dead against you (I mean one too strong to sail against, and I have had some experience of that) the original engine was a joke.
We have moved on from the days when the traditional attitude was that a true sailing yacht only needed an engine for the calms - if there was any wind it sailed. Yes, I know there are heroes who buy a sailing boat, tear the engine out and sail around the world, but they don't have to look after families, pay the mortgage and keep deadlines.
Best,
Brian.
