personally I'd avoid gate valves for the reasons prerviously stated anyway, but Securus came with them fitted.

As to turning off seacocks, my own practice has been to keep the toilet and heads basin seacocks closed unless in use. The basin ones I was more relaxed about in harbour but under way rough seas would result in spurts of water coming in unless the plug was in place.

Galley basins seacock I left open under way as it was used frequently.

when leaving the boat I turned off all but the engine seacock.

Partly because the boat was shared, partly because the original seacock was a gatevalve (see earlier comments). Even when I had changed it for a balll valve so that there was a positive indication of status I would always leave the sea cock open on leaving the boat.

Insurance will pay for a sunken boat but not a cooked engine.
