We have a 4 stroke Tohatsu 6hp longshaft with saildrive prop. It fits easily in the well and is the same weight 29kg as an equivalent 2 stroke. It is quieter than a 2 stroke at low speed but being single cylinder, the vibration is unpleasant at full throttle.

Storage in the locker is more complex than a 2stroke. I have fitted another handle at the back of the motor and find it easy to lower it into the correct position in the port locker and then lash it in place with a quick turn of shock cord. It is very economical. We have done quite a bit of motoring in company with another TS240 which has a 9hp 2 stroke merc and he uses at least 3 times as much fuel as us. He has now changed to a 6hp 4 stroke 2 cyl Honda which is much more economical than his merc and does not have the vibration problem of our Tohatsu but it is quite a bit heavier than our engine.

I think the ideal solution would be a twin cylinder long shaft 4 stroke weighing less than 30kg but I don't know of one.

If you buy a 2 stroke, bear in mind the impending european legislation which will I believe make 2 strokes illegal in the medium term.

Best wishes

Godfrey
