Oh it's not shaft whip John, it's definitely limescale.

Yes I know sea water is hard water, but lime is normally deposited at an air/water interface or through heat.

I think turbulence can know it out of the water too, but I didn't know why it chose to get deposited inside my cutlass bearing.

Clearly it is nothing to do with movement, more the lack of it.

When the shaft has been cleaned of limescale there is no noise at all from it so it clearly is purely a limescale problem.

The real solution is to use the boat more often.
