Reading your original note filled me with trepidation as it was mast raising time for Nidri yesterday.

When I bought the boat it came with an assortment of bits of steel framework which would provide a stable base to attach the two genoa halyards to act as stays as the mast was raised. After much time fiddling with these pieces, it seemed as if everything was in place. In actual fact the apperatus worked very well and the mast went up with little problem.

However, points that I will remember for next time:

1. Moving the mast back to locate the pivot pin is very heavy job. With one person at the back of the cockpit and one at the base of the mast means that the poor guy at the back is having to lift the whole weight of the mast once it is back. Next time I will make a roller instead of a crutch.

2. The mast is surprisingly heavy. With a block and tackle of 4:1 (mainsheet), the mast could not be raised without someone pushing up from the cockpit.

3. Ensure that the T terminals on the shrouds stay in the mast as it is raised, one of my lowers came out as it was nearly vertical. The dissappointment of having to lower the mast and start again is great!

4. Make sure the shroud bottlescrews are kept in line otherwise the bottom thread can be bent.

It's great to finally get the mast up, but I have yet to set it up properly.

Does anyone have a recomendation for mast rake?

Giles
