Dear Henry and Mary, Ive just spotted this thread and thought I would chip my 2 penerth in. On Optica I have the original Proctor mast which I think should have had "Butoni" on it. The last owner changed all the gear to slides on the main and Hanks on the forsails. I had terrible problems with the main, as as soon as you tweaked the back stay, the effective hight from gooseneck to truck was shortend. this gave big pulls from each slide and infact on a breezy day 1 of the slides broke with a huge bang and great shaking of the mast.I tried to pull out the slack with the cunningham but this allowed the foot to become to bagy and gave a poor sail shape and resulting performance sufferd to a very supprising degree.I have changed back to a bolt rope and find no probems raising and dropping the sail now that I have a feeder on the track just above the goose neck. the mast is far more stable and the main is a lot more controlable.and has increased the average speed by some 1/4 -1/2 knott. I would suggest you contact the mast manufacture if you have a different mast. if the same mast then I would procede with caution and talk a great deal with the sail makers. My sail is by East coast sails and I think that the last owner only gave them the basic dimmensions for the sail and it was not cut for that mast with hanks etc etc.I am still concerned about the mast as it pumps in a sea way and I am thinking of changing it next year, but its lasted this long with a bolt rope so maybe a new main would help. we will see what father christmas puts in the stocking.
Kim
