Subject: Babystay on T300 - Is it necessary?

Upon looking at another 300 yesterday, one with a Proctor mast, I realised that it didn't have a babystay brought down immediately aft of the forehatch as we have on BARECAT. Our mast is by Selden/Kemp and I have experience of Selden being very conservative when asked whether babystays were really necessary on on other designs of yacht, so I thought I'd ask those that race the T300 - particularly anyone racing a boat with the Selden/Kemp mast. The Proctor's extrusion may well have more fore and aft sectional rigidity, but the Selden extrusion appears to be of good size for the size of rig and the distance from mast step to aft edge of the forward hatch precludes much support being derived from the babystay. I can see that the babystay may assist in preventing the mast from inverting through spinnaker pole compression, but again, its attachment to the coachroof being so close to the mast step must limit the gain to be acheived. Any views?
