The Trapper 500 makes an excellent family cruising yacht but not just for off the coast but has a real offshore capability. Most have fin keels but about 1 in 10 is a bilge keeler. The rig is powerfull but does like to have it's main reefed fairly early to stop excessive weather helm. She motors well if the engine is one of the larger 12 HP plus units but fuel and water capacity is limited.

Check the rudder is not loose on the shaft, this can be a problem but is fairly easy to fix. P bracket shaft bearings can also cause problems but this is also a DIY job (check shaft for wear here. Probably the main problem is the balsa sandwich decks, most owners have had to reinforce them around the stanchion feet. Engine access is a bit tight and the electrics may need updateing.

For all this I've had a 500 since 1882 and still regulary sail cross channel and on down to Biscay. Problems this year have been a rusted fuel tank (mild Steel original) this is a job for the winter.

I hope that helps. As you can see there's loads of useful advice on the site with a lot of the users haveing had there boats for a long time.
