I'm afraid that letting it turn freely does create more drag that fixing the prop.

It's possible to land a helicopter [rather hard] by simply switching off the motor and letting the blades turn freely. This is called autorotation. The drag created will let you fell sufficiently slowly to survive the impact.

The same applies to props. It's also why they lock wind turbines if the windspeed becomes too great.
