Hi Giles,

It sounds as though we have boats about the same age. Mine is 1980 and was a boat shoe exhibit so must be close to yours. I rplaced the mild steel box about 5 years back. How I got to mine was I think the way Trappers put it in. If you remove the decorative lining from around the keel trunk you will probably find an inspection window on the port side. with the keel lowered you may be able to detect a panel in the front face of the trunk just below the lower level of the window glassed in by Trappers. I took a jig saw to this following the original line where possible and so had an opening the depth of the mild steel box across the front face and this did not weaken the structure.

If you then lower the keel so the top of the box is level with the bottom of the window it is possible to undo the keel bolts holding box to lower casting using a socket spanner and long extension - you may need a long handle as well to budge them but mine came out fairly easily.

Once the bolts are undone you can then slide the box forward and out through the opening. Whatever Trappers used to seal the joint was amazing - it needed a cold chisel and 4lb hammer to start them apart. I found on examination there was not a lot of metal left in places and it was as well I did it when I did - but it had not looked too bad from above. I had a new mild steel one made and galvanised which still looks to be OK. I have since heard of other owners having stainless boxes made at sensible prices which seems a lot better.

I have had my boat since 92 so have tackled quite a few repairs do email if I can help further. What I would like to know is how any body can access the bottom roller to replace it.
