As I understand it the first part of the travel on a single lever control is engaging gear and you should make sure you use all of this section, otherwise there can be excess wear in the box/clutch arrangement.

The next bit then connects to the throttle. Perhaps this linkage isn't set up correctly on your engine.

In my 1GM10 I had a different ratio in reverse, perhaps your box does too that would perhaps explain the difference for you between forward and reverse.
