I know the hanked on sails set better, but do you want to cruise or race?

If your only cruising in my experience by adjusting the amount of head sail with the reefing system you make a more consistant speed and at a lesser angle of lean. It's also much safer with an inexperienced crew for the skipper not to be on the foredeck doing sail changes if the wind picks up.

It's a good idea on your 500 to fit a back stay adjuster/tensioner as this vastly improves the set and balance of the head sail.
