Cunningham eyes or cringles are normally fitted to the luff of mainsails & sometimes to the luff of non furling Genoas. With a short 3 or 4:1 purchase tackle they enable you to increase luff tension quickly when apparent wind increases eg. when altering course from downwind to upwind in a race.

I use a Cunningham device regularly on my mainsail when racing (but not cruising because there's less urgency - I just take up more or less tension with the winch).

My boom (Kemp)is fitted with roller reefing but I must admit I have had little success in using it. I fitted slab reefing 24 years ago & have used it ever since. However I was interested to read Ted's technique for furling the sail (I always flake mine carefully on the boom to try & preserve the sail). I shall try it for furling (not for reefing - can't get the the right shape)
