Thanks for the quick response - much appreciated. Its reassuring to hear that this is a pretty common modification to the boat. The winch mechanism is in fact a captive worm driven one and not a standard capstan type deck winch that needs tailing - so no need to worry. My reference to the rope was expressing a concern about the likelihood of it chaffing through with the obvious consequence of the keel suddenly dropping all the way down -a wire replacement would be a sensible modification to make if we get the boat.

I think that the point that Brian and Nick made about the fact that it is only gravity that holds it down is a valid one (Thank Brian, Nick - again much appreciated) To be honest this was actually one of my main concerns with the whole arrangement. Are you aware if any of the other people in the forum who have moved over to a winch have done anything about preventing the keel from 'falling' back into the boat in a knockdown or is this not really seen as a problem.

I guess the other question to ask is if we wanted to re-instate the original hydraulic system can we actually buy the bits anywhere?
