Nick, John, You both have different tiller configurations (500 vs 501) but you both have good results with an Autohelm 1000 - makes me wonder what I am doing wrong.

Perhaps I have mounted the whole thing a bit too far forward because the siting is limited to where the swan neck tiller reaches the level of the locker top and the unit should be horizontal when operating. I thought I had followed the maker's instructions but it was twenty plus years ago. This would explain the "too little too late" as the further forward the less effect a given distance of ram movement has on rudder angle. However, I was imagining that the system's function must be to measure resultant bearing change from initial ram motor activation period and if too much or too little to dynamically correct by reversing or more of the same - it ain't rocket science and theoretically, the unit position shouldn't be critical if it has enough ram length (I have), sensitive bearing detection (probably uses the Autohelm digital fluxgate compass unit - good for single degee readout) and some logical algorithms (ah, software, probably the weak point).

Best,

Brian.
