Brian,

the bracket John (fred) describes is an optional extra with the autohelm.

The better solution to avoid nasty scratches is to use a piece of stainless that is fixed to the tiller at both ends and hasn't any protruding edge. This is how it was done on my 501 which has a different tiller design but the stainless addition is quite friendly with no sharp bits.

On the 500 the attachment is underneath the tiller, on yours it sounds like it needs to be above. You could still arrange it so that the nipple to which the piston attaches isn't exposed.

I wouldn't recommend fitting the unit so that it isn't horizontal though, the poor thing has enought to contend with as it is.
