I my prop was quoted as 12" dia, but it could well be 13"

As to the extra area, I did not explain myself well enough.
This needs to be in front of the pivot axis; I suspect that rounding off the leading edge in the original design is a mistake.

Richard Swire sent me a photo of his rudder; this has only a small radius at the tip, i.e. blade tip is almost square.

Checking the rudder behaviour when tied up was merely to understand what is happening, and is, as you say, irrelevant.

Ian Nicholson Yacht Data book says that more than 1/6th rudder area ahead of pivot is "dangerous.

Flex-O-Fold suggest that I should use a 14x10 two blade.
As the construction displaces the prop rearwards, it may get sufficiebt tip clareance, but needs some checking.
